My backbone is built on fire
Fueled by failure
Determination rising in each flame
Revealing ashes of courage

My backbone is held up by the kindness of others
One lumbar at atime
Hardened by pain
Solidified by forgiveness

My backbone sometimes curls up in bed
For seconds, minutes, hours
Until it loses count
Because even the hardest rocks can be broken by water

But my backbone always remembers
Its original shape
Its intended purpose
To stand up and tall and receive all it deserves
